SBHS Sustainable Foods Students Implement Rain Barrel Project
The Sustainable Foods class has been working on service learning projects, which are designed to better help the community and environment. One of the groups is trying to improve the garden that supplies the cafeteria with fresh vegetables. Their efforts led to an idea; purchase rain barrels to utilize rainfall, thus increasing irrigation. The group contacted Gardener’s Supply to secure a donation; Gardener’s Supply graciously donated a rain barrel, and gave a large discount on the second. The plan is to use the barrel’s future rain water and hose to draw the water out, minimizing the use of chemically treated water from the city, and maximizing use of water. With this new improvement to the garden at SBHS, production of higher quality foods from the garden are a promise for the cafeteria’s future. |
